A MERMAID HAS NO TEARS, AND THEREFORE SHE SUFFERS SO MUCH MORE . . .

I really meant to paint today, but as I stopped to take a short break - check my email, and refill my tea, I got hopelessly lost, exploring the endless sea of internet wonders. We are incredibly lucky to live in this digital age, where we have instant access to valuable information and endless inspiration. Today, I scored big time; I found an amazing photographer, whose work I absolutely love! Her name is Marie Zucker, and she’s only 22. Here’s how she describes herself: “I like black cats, tragic girls, sherbet, lucid dreaming, knees, jawbreakers & collarbones”. Now, if that doesn’t peak your interest . . .
This shoot is incredible. Her images are dreamy, captivating, and full of story. I'm totally drawn to these somber, sexy photographs. Make sure to check out the rest of her amazing work at  ➳♥➳

"Ride the energy of your own unique spirit." - Gabrielle Roth

Tonight’s tea reading expressed the notion that, “when you are in tune with the unknown, the known is peaceful”. This felt appropriate, and insightful, as I’m always attempting to make peace with the present. Aligning and opening to the “what is” of each moment, allows us to appreciate the inherent beauty of life. With a little tuning in, what we may have assumed to be mundane and ordinary, turns out to be a portal into the center of the mystery of existence itself. Within a cup of tea, a universe vibrating.

Charcoal Alley, is an amazing vehicle for me. I wake up excited to see what fun projects are being shared; what is going to inspire me, today? Like a world within a world, it is a space in my life, where it feels really wonderful to express myself in so many forms -- fashion, art, photography, and writing. It’s my gift to the world, and to myself. The beautiful, Katharine Hepburn, said “If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased”. Don’t you love that? So, rock on babes - “ride the energy of your own unique spirit”, because passions and self expression are what makes the world amazing.

This outfit is all about the bohemian, rocker. She’s not afraid to mix patterns and take risks. Indeed, she’s the the electric eel in the bowl of goldfish. What’s better than a soft cool t-shirt? Morning Warrior’s has that chic feel, that can help every girl with an extra bit of needed sass. Pair it with a Truth and Pride, leather vest, and you’ve got a real bad-ass vibe happening - especially in combination with these, Winter Kate pants, which add a little bohemian flare to the mix. I topped it off with a grounding, wool hat to soften the look. Finally, in my style book, you simply can’t go wrong with jewels. I’ve layered in a lot of delicious pieces by two rockin’ designers, De Petra and Vanessa Mooney. Hope you enjoy!

. . . Secret Lovers . . .

Posted on: 1.20.2013

Mysterious, precious, and jewel-like, an original “Lover’s Eye” can sell for thousands - if you are lucky enough to find one.  It’s estimated that there were perhaps as little as 1,000 such miniatures painted between 1780 and 1830 throughout England and France.  This was a time when, marriage for love, was virtually unknown.  Marriages were arranged for political and financial alliances.  Love affairs were common, and during this brief period, it became fashionable for secret lovers to wear an unidentifiable piece of their lover’s anatomy, most often an eye, in the form of a ring, brooch, pendant, or other pocket-size trinket.  They were then, lavishly and delicately decorated with pearls and various jewels, and often worn and displayed quite publicly, while the true owner of the painted eye remained a mystery.  The “Lovers Eyes” provide us with a rare, and telling glimpse, into the history of the human psyche and evolution.

I adore these little beauties.  For me, they have a really contemporary feel.  Hand-painted, watercolor on ivory, the originals are incredibly delicate and fragile - perhaps best kept in a safe place and out of direct sunlight.  However, there are numerous knock-offs and reproductions that look fabulous and fresh in a bejeweled mix.  As an artist, I am totally inspired by the “Lover’s Eyes”.  I won’t be surprised to see their influence resurfacing in my own work.

. . . Looking for home . . .

Posted on: 1.14.2013

As you probably know, I was recently invited by Spell and the Gypsy Collective to be a holiday guest blogger.  Here is the full post, but I want to encourage you to visit Spell's Blog, because they have one of the best blogs out there.

The blogging opportunity could not have been better timed, since I had just done a photo shoot on Kauai, rocking their fantastic,  Hanalei shell skirt.  I wanted to capture the wild, free spirit of Spell, and I think we were successful.  In the above photo, I had the idea of creating a kind of halo or headdress out of bleached beach wood, feathers, nuts and other natural elements that were scattered upon the sand.  It turned out to be a perfect adornment for an earth angel, and a fitting tribute to the spirit of Spell.

Looking for home . . .
Do you dream of a place called home? Do you long for someplace, somewhere out there? Do you picture yourself on a lush, tropical island, on a quaint, city street in San Francisco, in a hip, ski town, or on a green, hill top in the Mediterranean ? For awhile now, I’ve been telling myself that I need to move; that Salt Lake City, is too small, too conservative, too . . . familiar for me. Last week I was on the island of Kauai. Breathtakingly beautiful. This is it, I told myself, “I need to get back to the islands–I want to live here.” But, by the end of the trip, it also felt small, isolated and limited. I was ready to get back to my real life.
As I travel and experience different parts of the planet (always with an eye that — “this might just be the place”), I find that everywhere seems to have it’s own form of duality. This part feels good, but that aspect feels, not so good. It’s beautiful, but the traffic is horrendous. It’s peaceful, but too hot in the summer. It’s perfect, but, it’s too expensive. You get the picture. SLC, with it’s perceived limitations, is also safe, convenient, and beautiful. So, here I am for now.
The key to life, then, is appreciating and being grateful for wherever you are. We must love what we have, here and now, because things constantly change. If we are always feeling that the “grass is greener” someplace else, we miss the abundance and goodness that surrounds us, now. We can always paint an ideal image of what could be or should be, but, have you noticed, life never works out exactly as we envisioned it? And yet, that’s the beauty of life . . . nothing is written in stone, and it’s always surprising us.
I’m not telling you not to take an adventure, or move somewhere new. In fact, listen to your heart and follow its sage advice. But, wherever you find yourself, take a tip from this line from an old, James Taylor song, “the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time”. So wherever you are, here you are. This is your time. This is your life. Surrender to what is. Even better, trust what is, who and where you are. Then, shine!
